10-15 feet in height and width. This tough shrub is very tolerant of poor soils, drought, constant winds, and some shade.
It produces bright-yellow 1" flowers in late spring, followed by 2" seed pods. Hummingbirds are attracted in droves to the flowers.
Leaves turn yellow-green in fall. Native to Siberia, Mongolia.
Use as hedge, screen, or windbreak. Very winter hardy.
Requires little maintenance, is very tolerant of drought, cold winter temperatures, and poor soil conditions. Has good tolerance to alkaline soils and deicing salt, and is not bothered by rabbits.
This plant has an extensive root system and can be used for erosion control, especially on marginal land. Because of its nitrogen-fixing capacity, it is valued as a soil-improving plant.
Edible Uses:
The seeds of
Siberian
