Angelica
Archangelica officinalis
aka Angelica Archangelica
Angelica is a perennial herb which has a multitude of culinary and medicinal uses. Also used in potpourri and baths.
Plant in the coolest part of the garden. Light shade is a plus. The soil should be deep, rich, moist and slightly acid, but not soggy. Soggy soil will cause the plants to die back.
Transplant seedlings to the garden when they have four to six leaves. They have long taproots that are best not disturbed, so start in individual peat pots or Jiffy 7 Pellets.
Flowering is spectacular, occurring in the second or third year. However, this spectacular flowering does have a downside. Once the plant flowers, it will not come back the next year. You can prolong the life of this herb by cutting the flowering stem the first two or three years, but the fourth year will probably be it's last, so let it flower. Start some new plants every year or two.
