Black Pussy Willow
Salix gracilistyla 'Melanostachys'
Scarce and hard to find!
Zone: 4-9
Height: 8 ft
Spread: 8 ft
Deciduous shrub or small tree
Prefers full sun , but will grow "almost anywhere"
Japanese origin. In early spring, the catkins are so dark they appear
black against the red twigs. As they mature, the yellow stamens and red
anthers produce a striking effect. For best growth and catkin production, plant
in moist soil in full sun. Not as rampant a grower as the common silver
pussy willow.
The black Catkins in the spring are a real break from the common silver pussy willow. Plants may not form catkins (the 'pussy willow' part) until the second year.
Sturdy 12-24" tree/shrub. Grown in containers. SHIPPED out of pot with rootball wrapped. Ships as a shrub form. may be trained as a tree, if desired.
