In Japan, this unique double flowered mophead is called 'Setsuka-Yae'.  (Just in case you wanted to know)  Bloom color ranges from soft pink to clear blue depending on soil ph.  Blooms later than most, thereby extending the season.  A garden treasure!

The bigleaf hydrangea with it's bold and brightly colored flowers are almost unrivaled in the plant world.  Expect 3-5' in height and spread at maturity.  Hardy in zones 5-8.  South of zone 6, afternoon shade is almost a must.

Flower buds are formed on current growth for bloom the following year, so careful pruning is necessary.  Best time to prune is right after bloom.

Excellent cut flower with a long vase life.

Space 5-6 feet for borders.

Hardy to zone 5b.  Supplemental winter protection recommended north of zone 6.  We are in zone 5a and have them bloom if the winter is not too severe.  Under extreme winter conditions, this will die back to the ground and sprout new growth from the roots in spring.  Since blooms are developed on one year old wood, it would not bloom that year.
