Golden Lanterns®   Pheasant Berry

Leycesteria GOLDEN LANTERNS® 'Notbruce ®' PPAF PBRAF

A great addition to the perennial border, leycesteria is an easy growing plant with lots of color. GOLDEN LANTERNS’ sunny yellow foliage has reddish new growth. Dark purple-red bracts and 4” long, pendulous flowers make it even more colorful. Also called pheasant berry, the dark purple fall fruit does indeed attract pheasants and other wildlife.   Edible berries taste like caramel or chocolate.

In the north this is a dieback shrub; extra thick mulch may be needed in colder climates.

Rarely bothered by birds.

The stems are hollow like bamboo and were used to create flutes in Asia.

Growing Tips
Any fertile foil. Thrives in wet conditions near ponds. In northern climates, requires a thick covering of mulch. Best if pruned in late fall or early spring. Tolerant of hard pruning. High moisture is best. Deciduous, dies back in the north and should be treated like a perennial.
