The "gray" refers to the color of the 'cone', not the actual flower petals which are a golden yellow.

This is a native plant from the Great Plains, therefore it likes a dry, well-drained soil and is very drought-tolerant. Flower size varies with amount of moisture plant receives, but they will not perform in soggy soil.
