Liriope
Variegated shown above
Liriope is a perennial known for its evergreen, grass-like leaves. The
lavender to blue flower spikes and bluish black berries that follow add
interest. It makes an attractive small-area ground cover and is also used for
edging. Try it also on slopes, around pools, dry steam beds and rock
gardens. Liriope is also known as lilyturf.
Mature size: 24 inches with large, arching leaves.
Clump-forming and non-invasive, it is an elegant ground cover in areas where it is hardy.
Zones 5-10
We have both the green and the variegated types.
Culture:
Liriope will grow in sun or shade although it performs best in light shade.
Not a good choice for full sun in the south during summer. Plant in
fertile, well-drained, moist soil enriched with a good amount of organic
matter. It may die to the ground during winter in the northern part of its
range, but will sprout new growth in the spring. If its leaves look shaggy at
winter's end, mow or cut the plants to the ground.
Liriope plants will show tip burn on their leaves if the soil contains too much
salt or if they are kept too wet in areas where drainage is poor.
