Rabbit's Foot Pussy Willow

Also known as "Japanese Pussy Willow"
Huge catkins, many the size of a rabbit's foot! Honey, I blew up the pussy willows! Not commonly found and a real conversation starter.
This early "budding" pussy willow will get a lot of attention! Red branches, catkins that start out with a red "blush" at the top and then explode into a caterpillar-like super-wonder-bud!
Introduced to American gardens from Japan in the 1980s, this willow has the biggest catkins (2 1/2" to 3" long) in the willow family. Emerging from dark red buds, the catkins are silvery gray and take on a pink cast as they age. Also attractive in the winter garden as the stems are a rich mahogany-red. This is the best of the willows for cutting and forcing. Grows to 20' high and benefits from hard pruning every few years. Easy to grow preferring sun and moist, but well-drained soils.

The plant grows rapidly and needs to be cut back every few years. Like most
willows, it grows in moist soil. keep away from septic fields and
tanks. The roots will invade!
