Red Barberry
Berberis thunbergii
This thorny, rugged shrub makes an excellent hedge and may be sheared to shape. Also commonly used as an accent plant. Deep red-burgundy foliage in full sun. Will turn green if grown in the shade. Fall color is a brilliant crimson-red. Evidently, hummingbirds like this shrub for nesting as we find the walnut-shell size nest in the nursery plants from time to time. Prefers well drained sandy soils, but will adapt to just about anything short of soggy. Drought tolerant.
The sharp thorns are a very good deterrent to those who like to "cut through" a hedge
Deer don't like it!!

Fall color above.
As a hedge plant 2-4' apart
