Shadblow Serviceberry
Amelanchier canadensis

Fall colors

Also known as Juneberry.
One of the first trees to bloom in early spring, these trees are covered with billowy masses of small white flowers. Berry-like fruits are produced in summer and are edible if the birds don't get them first.
Trivia: Serviceberry got it's name from the custom in days gone by of cutting the branches in winter and forcing them into bloom for Sunday church services.
Height: 25-30 feet
Zones: 3-8
Sun to partial shade.
Landscape use: Buffer strip, shade tree.
The delicious fruits are eaten by many songbirds and mammals, so consider
yourself lucky if you get to taste them before they are gone.
