St Johnswort
Hypericum perforatum
All-Purpose Herb! Use as a dye, a liniment for joint pain, even a mood 'upper'
Crushed flowers create a red dye which is unusual since the
flowers are yellow!.
Settlers in the 1600s brought fame to the St. Johnswort plants because of
the discovery of a fluorescent red pigment, named Hypericum, that oozes from the
crushed flowers.
Today, it has become well-known as a treatment for depression
and is being trialed in treatments for AIDS.
St. Johnswort is ornamental as well, growing upright with reddish-brown woody
based stems. Five petal, bright yellow flowers appear in summer. At full size,
this plant will grow 2 feet tall and 18 inches wide.
Grow in well-drained to dry soil in sun or partial shade. Can become
invasive if left to go to seed. Cut spent flowers (deadhead) and/or remove
seed heads before they ripen.
Considered a noxious weed in California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington State, and Wyoming. Hence, we cannot ship this seed or plant to the above states.
