Winterberry Holly Ilex verticillata
Also known as common winterberry. One of the best plants for fall and winter color. Female plants produce bright red berries in profusion in early fall while leaves are still green and remain until mid-winter. Berried stems often used in seasonal dried arrangements. Late fall foliage yellow. Likes acidic soil, will tolerate wet, swampy conditions. Very good shrub as a screen or background.
Zone: 4-9
Height: 9 Feet
Spread: 9 Feet
Generally erect shrubs (6 to 9' tall) which may be kept pruned to as short as three feet.
Space minimum 4 feet apart; farther if you intend to allow full growth. Space 9 feet apart for hedge/screen.
Male and female plants must be within 100 feet of each other for best fruit production.
The plant grows in sun or partial shade and a rich, well-drained soil, although it tolerates swampy areas. Winterberry is dioecious, so both male and female plants are needed for fruit production.
